That´s what people who traveled with Gerald say!
Jambo everybody and specially our Gerald !!
We’re just coming back home two weeks ago from a great journey of safari in Tanzania ! We recommends this experience to all lovers of the nature and the fans of the wild animals. We were very lucky and have profited of all the treasure of this wonderful country.
We were specially accompanied by a great team with Niko, our guide and the most famous cooker of Tanzania, Gerald, the one who can cook divinely even if there is not a lot of comfort and facilities in the bush !!
Gerald is kindness personified, such a quiet man but very endearing who is always smiling and who has the heart to take care of his guests. Every day, we were spoiled with this fabulous recipes from the breakfast with delicious pancake, fresh bread and all pastries done on fire, until dinner. He also make us discovered the Tanzanian foods and various local specialty who cut short the myths about bad African food !
We specially recommend the future travelers Gerald’s various soup and all typical food preparations with sweet potatoes, vegetables…and the desserts with all exotic fruits !!! So amazing !
We really enjoyed the food during this two weeks and were deeply touched by the humanity of this two guys who made us live a memorable experience in Tanzania.
We would like to thanks them a lot and dedicated this journey to this dream team. You leave us an incredible memory and we wish you a lot of success and beautiful human encounters for further !
And Gerald we will keep contact to learn some of your recipes and see you achieve your dream of having your own restaurant maybe one day.
With great affection.

Hi everybody, my wife and I have been to North Tanzania for 14 days in 2008. It was tremendous ! This country is so beautiful. We went to Arusha, Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti. Both the landscape and the animals are unforgettable. Of course, it was with Gerald, such a good cook and a good person. We’ve never had such a kind and friendly guide. To anyone who wants to go to Tanzania, I really recommend to go with Gerald.

I spent 5 days on classic safari route in January 2011. I must say that highlight No 2 was food prepared by Gerald. /No 1 were animals of course/. After safari I spent 2 more weeks in Tanzania and Gerald’s meals were far the best I had tasted there. I loved his soups especialy, but everything else was also great. It was served by him and he was always pretty proud of what he cooked. No wonder. In very basic conditions which safari cooks have to deal with it was a real masterpiece what he created. Dinners with deserts at the end were actualy very romantic. I was quite sorry that my wife could not go with me on this trip. I also liked Gerald as person. Easy going funny guy. We often talked after dinner and I have to admire his life attitude.
So thanks a lot Gerald and keep your standard. I miss Tanzania, I miss your food.

We shared with Gerald a 5-days safari and we surprised a lot because we could discover plenty of Tanzania dish. It was really the best food that we’ve tasted in our trip around Tanzania for one month. Thank you very much and good luck with your restaurant!!! Don’t change your mind.
I travelled with Gerald for a 12-days safari and I experienced the fantastic mixture of tastes the cook of Africa can provide. It was an awesome experience and I was surprised of how good dishes may be when the principal ingredient is passion for your own job. Gerald made me understand that cusine is fantasy and hart, and with those, results may be surprising even without sofisticate gear. I can definitly say to try cook of Africa to go deeper into the Tanzanian style!! Many thanks Gerald and good luck!!
Jambo ! First of all Gerald is a great guy ! We really enjoyed his company and had lots and lots of fun ! He is very knowledgeable about everything: ranging from wildlife to local culture and food and Africa in general. Furthermore, you can always rely on him. After a long safari day Gerald had to start preparing dinner, he went to bed last and he woke up first to prepare fantastic breakfast and lunch boxes. We went to the most beautiful places on earth (Serengeti, Ngorogoro, Ol Donyo Lengai, Lake Manyara…) and we were really glad that we had such a nice person like Gerald by our side. That’s what makes experiences like this really unforgettable.
Then: his cooking: It’s really amazing what he can do with just some pots and some charcoal in the middle of the bush. The food he prepared for us exceeded our expectations by far! He always prepared a three-course meal with fresh soups and salads, tasty meat and chicken dishes and great desserts, always using market-fresh ingredients and spices. He taught us about safari cooking and we enjoyed hanging around with him in the “kitchen” and lending him a hand. Don’t expect to loose weight when you go on a safari with Gerald ! His portions are big and his food is just delicious. His dishes were some the best we’ve ever eaten !
Asante sana rafiki !
Gerald was our cook for a 10 days safari in Tanzania. We eated very very well. Every day we had a different nutritious healthy meal. I was impress about the quality of the meal even in the middle of Serengeti. He’s very conscious about salubrity and such a nice man to travel with!!
I think his internet site should be Bestcookofafrica.com
I recommend Gerald to any traveller for whom good eating is of crucial importance!!

Soooo happy to see your website up! No doubt you are the VERY BEST cook in all of Africa. We still don’t know how you did it, but glad you did. Jennifer and I still talk about the awesome food after a long, hot day riding in the Toyota. Best memories are the laughs and good stories had with you and Michael. Take care.

“Apart from being such a kind and humble person, Gerald is a genius!
With his magic oven, he cooks incredible, inventive and delicious soups, meats in sauce, salted pies and breads, desserts…
We will remember forever his crumble pie, chocolate pie and the each morning different flavour pancakes!!
He makes gold from the inner difficulties of safari conditions, and as he is passionate and curious and receives travelers from all around the world, his own cook takes advantage of several horizons, which is a treasure!
He is always open to talk about it, and share his unexpected tricks! It has been an honor to meet him, because he does cook with the heart, and like an art.

“Each morning started with an excellent breakfast, followed by a yummy lunch and what should I tell you about the dinners! Everything in a way you would aspect at a five-star resort in the Caribbean but not in the bush in the heat of Central Africa. It´was amazing what Gerald created each day in the middle of nowhere. Best I would have urged him to come home with me.”
Thomas Richardson, USA
“Northern Tanzania is amazing. It´s a lifetime experience. Gerald added a lot to make it a very special trip I´ll never forget. We were lucky to have him as our cook and companion. Food is delicious and after hours of cooking in the heat he still took time to join us. He gave us so many insights of Africa. We had serious talks about the continent, the different ways of life’s. And we had so much to laugh!”
Christian Mann, Austria
“To be honest: When I planned my Safari my only fear was that I would get sick from the local food. I brought so many instant food with me. Even bread in the can! But it was not worth the effort! Thanks to Gerald. We met a lot of other people who had troubles. We never. Gerald knows how to prepare everything. And his meals are very thoughtful. We were amazed day by day.”
Riccardo Marco, Italy
“I always wanted to see the African wildlife close and camp in the savanna under the sky. Gerald helped us to plan the trip. We had Game drives in the National Parks, saw the Big Five and hiked Ngorongoro Crater Area, the Great Rift Valley escarpment to Lake Natron with local Massai as guides. Gerald was always with us. So we had not to worry about anything. Thanks a lot!”
Takeshi Hisaishi, Japan
In January 07 we attended a 5 day safari trip camping in Lake Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Gerald Ulomi was cooking for us and furthermore assisted the driver with guiding. We highly enjoyed the trip and will never forget spending New Year on the crater rim. Regarding wildlife we got to see the big five and A LOT more: in our case this safari beats Kruger by far.
During the 5 days we enjoyed really nice and varied meals; incredible regarding the facilities! At some point another group was actually complaining to their chef, when they saw, what we were served…
Even though it was pouring with rain a lot of the time, Gerald managed to keep up the good spirit and creates a nice and homely atmosphere during the trip. With Gerald’s English skills, his good sense of humour and not least his knowledge about wildlife and Africa in general; you’re guarantied fun and interesting conversation.
We can highly recommend attending safari with Gerald.
